Mandolin Concerto with String Orchestra
Posted by Alex Timmerman (aetimmerman@yahoo.com) on Monday, June 12 2006 @ 14:16:00

Dear Mandolin friends,

I am happy to announce a concert of importance for our instrument:

The ´YOUNG TALENT CONCERT´

organized by
The ORKEST van het OOSTEN

conducted by
CANDIDA THOMPSON

special guest: The young Dutch mandolinist FERDINAND BINNENDIJK

This concert is special because three young musicians were selected from a large group of young competitors by the jury of Het Orkest van het Oosten (abroad known as ´The Netherlands Symphony Orchestra´), as talented on their instruments.
One of the three chosen musicians is Ferdinand Binnendijk, a promising young mandolinist. The two other finalists are Alain Pondman on saxophone and Martine Stigt Thans on violin. The mandolin is in good company, so to speak!

The concert is all the more notable because Ferdinand Binnendijk will perform the première of the Concerto No. 1 in d-minor for Mandolin and Chamber Orchestra composed by American composer John Craton.

Mr. Craton is a prolific composer and has already composed three Concertos for Mandolin and Orchestra. The 1st Mandolin Concerto is dedicated to the Greek composer Victor Kioulaphides, the 2nd for French/American mandolinist Richard Walz while the 3rd concerto was composed for Gertrud Weyhofen. Besides these concertos he also wrote works for solo mandolin, mandolin and piano, mandolin orchestra and mandolin in other settings.
More information about the composer and his work is available at his website: http://www.craton.net/music/midi2.htm. MIDI files of his music (including the Mandolin Concertos and other works for mandolin ) can be heard at this website: http://www.newmusicjukebox.org/composers/c_works.asp?ComposerID=18716&ActorID=39189

The Mandolin Concerto No.1 in d-minor has three movements; an Allegro, an Adagio subtitled “Alabama Lullaby” and an Allegretto. Having heard this work performed by Ferdinand Binnendijk accompanied by his pianist Eva van den Dool, I can inform you that it is simply a wonderful new Mandolin Concerto that deserves to be played and heard.

The ´YOUNG TALENT CONCERT´ will take place on Thursday June 15th, starting at 19.00 hours in the Nieuwe Buitensociëteit, Stationstraat 3 in Zwolle (Netherlands). The concerthall of the ´Nieuwe Buitensociëteit´ is located opposite the train station.

Hoping to have informed you about the composer, his work and this special concert featuring the young Dutch mandolinist FERDINAND BINNENDIJK, I´ll end this announcement with You are all very welcome!

Best greetings, Alex Timmerman.

40th Plectra Music International Festival of La Rioja
Posted by Sociedad Artística Riojana on Tuesday, February 07 2006 @ 15:37:00

    6-12 de Agosto de 2006

The International Festival of Plectro Music of La Rioja is described as an international encounter for promotion of music performed by plectro formations.

    Essential objetives
1 encourage the composition and interpretation of music created for instruments plucked with a plectrum. (These include the families of the lute, bandurria, mandolin, domra, American mandola etc.)

2 extend the culture of plectro music, interpreted by orchestras and chamber groups in all those places that demand our concerts.

3 foster cultural exchange and cooperation with national or international institutions of Plectrum Music

All orchestras, groups or soloists whose program contains 33% of original music for plectro as a minimum have the option to participate.

The organizers understand as original music, the one which was conceived and written for plucked instruments by a composer of any epoch.

Further they see as original music, folk or popular music from any country which was created or developed with plectro instruments

    Besides, the Festival offers participants:

a.. Spaces for musicians to listen to each other, enabling mutual exchange and enrichment.
b.. The possibility to attend to official concerts of the festival as well as to perform at spontaneous 'concerts among friends' arranged intentionally out of the plan of the International Festival of Plecto Music.
c.. The possibility to present new proposals in front of a specialized audience and difficult works to listen at.
d.. To take part at other celebrations and entertaining events organized during the Festival.

    General conditions for participation
1The Festival may take part orchestras and ensembles as well as soloists, duos, quartets, etc., who agree with these conditions and get an invitation from the Organising Committee.

2Requisites for orchestras and groups to get an invitation are:

a.. To fill in and sign the attached Candidature form, thus anifesting their intention to participate and preferred dates, handing it over in the fixed time.
b.. To attach one of the recent concert programs and a recording (MC, CD, or similar) so that the organizers can evaluate the music performed by the orchestra or group as well as an advance of the pieces (name, composer) that would be terpreted at the Festival.
c.. To attach a short biography.

3The organisers offer to all musicians who take part: Free stay with full board (food and bed) at a student residence (in double rooms,) for maximal 20 people / an orchestra for between 2 and 5 days of permanence.

4Traveling expenses (to Logroño and back home) go on the cost of the participants

5Participants will be ready to give as many concerts as the organizers find opportune, depending from the time of permanence and the program needs.

6The cost of the accompanists' accommodation and food is in charge of the orchestras or groups. The organizers can provide these people with full board (bed and food) for 36 E/Person / 1 day

The dates to be kept strictly are
    a.. Handing of candidature form:
    limit: 15th February
b.. Invitation to participants by the Committee:
    After 25th February
c.. Definitive confirmation and reception of complete documentation (programs, photographs, Nr. of participants and accompanists, confirmation of dates)
    limit: 1st May

    Additional remarks

The Organizing Committee preserve the possibility to make changes or exceptions to these conditions.
